 IP Cameras or Analog

Written by: John Anderson - Jul 29, 2010

Both analog and IP cameras offer a good picture quality, so does it matter which one you use in your security cameras installation?

Growth rates of IP cameras are estimated at 40%, so the market share is growing, and camera companies want to put out the latest and greatest products. IP cameras make a lot of sense in terms of efficiency. You can use the same type of cat 5 or cat 6 cable that you are already using for voice and data and put video on it. This could save you from using seperate power supplies as well because you could use a power over ethernet switch.

There are two methods of using IP video. Using a video transceiver, analog camera output can be put on a cat 5 cable, back to a video receiver and back to the dvr. A simpler solution is to use an IP camera. These are connected right into your Cisco switch and the DVR communicates with them through the network. IP cameras are well suited to run over metro ethernet connection, enabling you to see your cameras at any location.
