T1 101 – Basics for Business

What is a T1 Line?

The first thing about a T1 line is that it is a business service, not residential. This is simply a matter of cost. While a T1 can offer an advantageous and economical way to bundle voice and data services for your business, the average household doesn’t use enough bandwidth to justify the cost. There are other alternatives that are more appropriate for residential or for a household business.

A T1 line is a dedicated circuit for your business that can provide voice (a phone line), data (internet access), or video (video conferencing), either as separate services or altogether. As mentioned, this can open up considerable savings as well as increasing productivity. Lets take a look at how this is done.

The foundation of a T1 is a four-wire digital circuit that carries 24 channels, each at the speed of 64 Kbps. This may not sound fast, but the combined effect is a speed of 1.544 Mbps! This is both ways, upload and download. These 24 Channels can be configured anyway you want to provide voice, data, and video. You can use all of the bandwidth for internet access, video conferencing or phone lines. You can also split it up to handle multiple services.

Here are a couple of examples. Let’s say your business has six incoming phone lines. You can use six channels of a T1 line for your phone lines (384 KBPS) and use the rest of the bandwidth for internet access (1.15 MBPS). Here's another scenario. If you have a retail business that often has long lines, how much time do your tellers and customers spend waiting because your credit card readers are bogging down? A T1 line can help with this too not only with increased bandwidth but also by having a service level guarantee of 99.9 percent reliability!
